Historic Seattle is pleased to offer a wide
variety of local and out of town tours, lectures, “how to”
demonstrations, and special events in 2010 that expand your views of
Seattle and environs and give insight into its architectural
delights. Learning from Historic Sites meetings and
tours take place in Squire Park, Pioneer Square, the University of
Washington, and Mount Baker. Open to View events include a wonderful
1922 Mediterranean Revival home and Historic Seattle’s own
mid-century landmark, the Egan House, a Lake Union cruise on the
Virginia V to learn first hand about the past, present, and future
of its shoreline, and a lecture in the most exquisite private
ballroom in Seattle preceding a self-guided walking tour of West
Highland Drive on Queen Anne Hill with additional interiors. The
popular Preserving Utilities series reprises 2009 sold out tours of
the Ash Grove Cement Company and Nucor Steel while adding visits to
Mutual Materials, the century old brick manufacturer still in the
same family ownership, the Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie,
and the Georgetown Steam Plant. Preserving Your Old House shows
homeowners how to repair plasterwork, wood windows, and prep and
paint.
A day tour to Olympia explores the State Capitol
campus with experts from the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks and
visits the privately owned Thornewood on American Lake, Spokane
architect Kirtland Cutter’s largest and most meticulous British
commission. A second day trip to Yakima shows off Westhome, the most
extraordinary Arts and Crafts period private home in the region,
along with other city landmarks. The annual Bungalow Fair
hosts 50 exhibitors and features outstanding lectures on Arts and
Crafts leather, Arts and Crafts architects in Portland, Oregon, and
the work of nationally important block print artist Frances
Gearhart. As part of National Historic Preservation Month
activities, Historic Seattle presents its 2nd Annual
Preservation Awards at the Women’s University Club downtown.
