For the past 27 years, Stephan has served as
artist-in-residence for the Art Deco Society of California. He
has designed magazine covers, note cards, pins and much
signage for them over the years. As a freelance graphic
artist, he has designed fashions, Christmas cards and sets and
costumes for many plays, musicals, operas and ballets.
Since moving
to Newport, Stephan has joined forces with Porthole Players as
a designer and performer. His sets have included You Can't
Take It With You, Sweet Charity, Oliver, Is He Dead?, My Fair
Lady, Opera Comique and The Apple Tree. He has recently signed
on as set designer for Porthole Player's production of The
Producers slated for the Fall of 2012
Raised on
Disney sunshine, Stephan had dreams of being an animator for
Walt Disney while growing up. He learned quickly that he
wasn't an animator and went into the theater. His first set
designs were for his high school choir's production of The
Wizard of Oz. In college, he discovered the works of Aubrey
Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha and, more auspiciously, Erte. This
had a major impact on him and the influence could be seen in
his sets for A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Boy Friend, The
Matchmaker, Show Boat, The Pirates of Penzance, and Narnia.
Stephan feels
very fortunate to have known Erte for the last ten years of
that legendary artist's life. It was the Art Deco Society that
convinced Stephan to put together a talk on Erte's career.
Although Stephan has several lectures under his belt, his talk
on the life and art of Erte is his most requested. He has
delivered his talk at two World Congresses on Art Deco and
five years ago, was sent on a cross country speaking tour for
Martin Lawrence Galleries to train their staff in each store.
Stephan also
serves as artistic consultant for the City Center Newport
Association otherwise know as Newport's Art Deco District. In
August of 2009, he curated two exhibitions at the Newport
Visual Arts Center to help promote the district. The Art of
Deco had over 200 pieces on display in what was one of the
best attended shows at the VAC. The public just couldn't get
enough of the furniture, ceramics, jewelry, ephemera, clothes
and art that took Stephan two years to amass. The second
gallery had an exhibit of Retro Deco which showed the works of
today's artists and craftspeople still working in the Art Deco
style.
Stephan has
recently trod the boards as the male lead in Porthole Players'
production of The Apple Tree and as Monsieur Thenardier in the
Voices for Life IV concert of Les Miserables. He was also seen
as Charity's boyfriend, Oscar, in Sweet Charity, Fagin in
Oliver, Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady, the sole male vocalist
is Side By Side By Sondheim and Annas in Jesus Christ
Superstar. This spring, Stephan will direct the highly
anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim's 'Company' at the
Newport Performing Arts Center.

| The Art Deco Society
Northwest is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
preservation and education of all aspects of the Art Deco
period. Our goal is to increase awareness, appreciation and
education of art deco, especially in the pacific northwest. Our
activities center around preservation, education, history, and
entertainment. |
| Our activities include information and action
about preservation projects which support the preservation of
buildings in the Pacific Northwest considered to be of the Art Deco
Period. |
| Meetings are held every other month, and the
programs vary from vintage films to speakers on a variety of
topics, such as architecture, interior design, fashion, jewelry,
movies, music, art and vintage transportation. Special events
include tours of Art Deco locations, film showings and discussions of
specific Art Deco styles. |
|
| Art Deco is an
artistic expression which gained prominence from the 1925
Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes
held in Paris. The exposition’s theme was based on the future
and on an artistic expression which complemented the machine
age. |
| The Art Deco Period encompasses the years
between World War I and World War II (1918-1941). Art Deco
motifs were applied to all design objects including clothing,
jewelry, furniture as well as the interiors and exteriors of
buildings. The 1930’s style turned to aerodynamic forms and was
termed The Machine Age |
